Statement of Purpose

Introduction

The Health and Social Care Act 2008, and supporting regulations including the Care and Support statutory guidance alongside the Care Quality Commission Regulations 2009 provide the legislative framework for the provision of this Shared Lives service.

Futures for Shared Lives works alongside Local Authority, Health and other providers and services to offer adults who require some support with day to day living need an alternative to care home and another domiciliary supports. A definition of need is provided under the Summary of Definitions later in this document.

The Futures for Shared Lives service recruits, assesses and offers training and support to those families or individuals who offer an adult placement within their own homes to those in need of such a placement.

It is important to state that it is The Service’s provision of personal care that is regulated, not the individual accommodation, which is either owned or rented by the Shared Lives provider.

All Shared Lives schemes are required to meet the following definition in order to be registered:- “adult placement scheme” means the scheme carried on (whether or not for profit) by a local authority or another person for the purposes of…

a) Recruiting and training adult placement carers

b) Making arrangements for the placing of service users with adult placement carers

c) Supporting and monitoring placements

The Futures for Shared Lives service is provided for people aged 18 years and above, it can and does provide continued service for those children placed under fostering regulations with an approved foster parent who wishes to continue to provide a fostering service alongside registration as a Shared Lives provider as well as services for those who have not previously been in foster care but have been assessed as suitable for an adult placement scheme.

Futures for Shared Lives is committed to ensuring that any transition from foster care to adult services is achieved in a smooth and timely fashion to achieve a seamless service for the young adult to an adult service. We also aim to provide well matched adult placements for all service users, no matter the length of placement required.
